Estreno de «Trolls» en línea irrita a dueños de cines

«Trolls World Tour», la secuela de la película «Trolls» de 2016, fue estrenada digitalmente a principios de mes por Universal Pictures (su casa productora) mediante la modalidad «on-demand», lo que ha generado el rechazo de los dueños de cines en Estados Unidos.

Debido a la pandemida de Covid-19, muchas casas productoras debieron reinventarse ante el inminente cierre de los cines. En una entrevista para el Wall Street Journal, el director ejecutivo de NBCUniversal, Jeff Shell, calificó el estreno digital de “Trolls World Tour” como un éxito, e indicó que apenas reabran los cines, “esperamos lanzar películas en ambos formatos”.

Como represalia, AMC Theaters, la cadena de cines más grande de Estados Unidos, señaló que ya no exhibirá películas de Universal, aún cuando el WSJ reportó que en tres semanas de rentas a la carta por 20 dólares, “Trolls World Tour” ha recaudado unos 95 millones de dólares.

“Universal no tiene razones para usar circunstancias inusuales en un ambiente sin precedentes como trampolín para saltarse los verdaderos estrenos cinematográficos (…) Ir al cine es una entrañable experiencia inmersiva y compartida. Muchas familias hubieran acudido en masa a ver Trolls si el mundo no estuviera secuestrado en casa”, dijo John Fithian, presidente y director ejecutivo de la Asociación Nacional de Dueños de Cines (NATO, por sus siglas en inglés).
